Prospective Battista clients to test a prototype of the most powerful Italian sports car ever built in the first half of 2020
Automobili Pininfarina to mark the 90th anniversary of the Pininfarina design house with a special vehicle unveiling at Geneva International Motor Show 2020
(Munich, 12th February 2020): Automobili Pininfarina has made a fast start into 2020, the 90th anniversary year of Pininfarina SpA, commencing the testing and development phase for the ground-breaking Battista – the world’s first fully electric luxury hypercar.
The Battista’s technical development schedule is headed by Automobili Pininfarina Sportscar Director Rene Wollmann, formerly of Mercedes-AMG. In the driving seat of Battista, prototype vehicles will be former Formula One and Formula E legend Nick Heidfeld, now a Development Driver and Ambassador for the Italian luxury car marque.
Rene Wollmann commented: “The mule vehicles running the chassis and powertrain concepts for Battista have already achieved 80 percent of their performance capability without issue. This means that our EV performance is already equal to the most powerful combustion engine-powered hypercar currently in the world. And in the simulation and wind tunnel testing phase, by fine-tuning the aero packaging, we’ve already seen a significant increase in the potential range of Battista versus our original prediction.
“In the next six months, we will progress to delivering a thrilling pure-electric hypercar that seamlessly produces 1,900 hp and 2,300 Nm torque across a range of driving modes to suit varying environments. Our clients cannot wait to experience this performance alongside Nick Heidfeld.”
Automobili Pininfarina’s teams of engineers will now undertake a rapid development program of exhaustive testing, evaluation, and development over the coming months, in the climates and environments that the Battista will be driven in, that culminates with the first hand-crafted Battistas being handed over to clients at the end of 2020 in Cambiano, Italy.
The Automobili Pininfarina Design Team, led by Chief Design Officer Luca Borgogno, has also created a unique livery for Battista prototypes, seen for the first time on the new hypercar as its technical development program accelerates into 2020.
Luca Borgogno said: “We have been humbled by the overwhelmingly positive response to the aesthetics of Battista since it was first revealed. So we have chosen to create a playful and interesting prototype livery design that is clearly inspired by the electrifying performance that lies beneath its beautiful exterior.
“Yet our ambition is always to further delight our future clients. To celebrate the 90th anniversary of the famous Pininfarina design house, the team at Automobili Pininfarina is now preparing the ultimate expression of Battista hypercar design, ready for its world premiere at next month’s Geneva International Motor Show.”
GM Reveals New Ultium Batteries and a Flexible Global Platform to Rapidly Grow its EV Portfolio
WARREN, Mich. – Starting today, General Motors Co. (NYSE: GM) is gathering hundreds of employees, dealers, investors, analysts, media and policymakers to share details of its strategy to grow the company’s electric vehicle (EV) sales quickly, efficiently and profitably.
“Our team accepted the challenge to transform product development at GM and position our company for an all-electric future,” said Mary Barra, GM chairman, and CEO. “What we have done is build a multi-brand, multi-segment EV strategy with economies of scale that rival our full-size truck business with much less complexity and even more flexibility.”
The heart of GM’s strategy is a modular propulsion system and a highly flexible, third-generation global EV platform powered by proprietary Ultium batteries. They will allow the company to compete for nearly every customer in the market today, whether they are looking for affordable transportation, a luxury experience, work trucks or a high-performance machine.
“Thousands of GM scientists, engineers and designers are working to execute a historic reinvention of the company,” said GM President Mark Reuss. “They are on the cusp of delivering a profitable EV business that can satisfy millions of customers.”
Ultium Batteries and Propulsion System Highlights
GM’s new Ultium batteries are unique in the industry because the large-format, pouch-style cells can be stacked vertically or horizontally inside the battery pack. This allows engineers to optimize battery energy storage and layout for each vehicle design.
Ultium energy options range from 50 to 200 kWh, which could enable a GM-estimated range up to 400 miles or more on a full charge with 0 to 60 mph acceleration as low as 3 seconds. Motors designed in-house will support front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, all-wheel drive, and performance all-wheel drive applications.
Ultium-powered EVs are designed for Level 2 and DC fast charging. Most will have 400-volt battery packs and up to 200kW fast-charging capability while our truck platform will have 800-volt battery packs and 350 kW fast-charging capability.
GM’s flexible, modular approach to EV development will drive significant economies of scale and create new revenue opportunities, including:
Continuous Improvement in Battery Costs: GM’s joint venture with LG Chem will drive battery cell costs below $100/kWh. The cells use a proprietary low cobalt chemistry and ongoing technological and manufacturing breakthroughs will drive costs even lower.
Flexibility: GM’s all-new global platform is flexible enough to build a wide range of trucks, SUVs, crossovers, cars and commercial vehicles with outstanding design, performance, packaging, range, and affordability.
Capital Efficiency: GM can spend less capital to scale its EV business because it is able to leverage existing property, including land, buildings, tools and production equipment such as body shops and paint shops.
Complexity Reduction: The vehicle and propulsion systems were designed together to minimize complexity and part counts beyond today’s EVs, which are less complex than conventional vehicles powered by internal combustion engines. For example, GM plans 19 different battery and drive unit configurations initially, compared with 550 internal combustion powertrain combinations available today.
Rising Customer Acceptance: Third-party forecasters expect U.S. EV volumes to more than double from 2025 to 2030 to about 3 million units on average. GM believes volumes could be materially higher as more EVs are launched in popular segments, charging networks grow and the total cost of ownership to consumers continues to fall.
New Sources of Revenue: By vertically integrating the manufacture of battery cells, the company can reach beyond its own fleet and license the technology to others.
The first generation of GM’s future EV program will be profitable. The initial programs will pave the way for further accretive growth. GM’s technology can be scaled to meet customer demand much higher than the more than 1 million global sales the company expects mid-decade.
Upcoming Launches and Reveals
Chevrolet, Cadillac, GMC, and Buick will all be launching new EVs starting this year. The next new Chevrolet EV will be a new version of the Bolt EV, launching in late 2020, followed by the 2022 Bolt EUV, launching Summer 2021. The Bolt EUV will be the first vehicle outside of the Cadillac brand to feature Super Cruise, the industry's first true hands-free driving technology for the highway, which GM will expand to 22 vehicles by 2023, including 10 by next year.
The Cruise Origin, a self-driving, electric shared vehicle, shown to the public in January 2020 in San Francisco, was the first product revealed using GM’s third-generation EV platform and Ultium batteries. Next will be the Cadillac Lyriq luxury SUV in April. Details about its launch will be shared then. The reveal of the Ultium-powered GMC HUMMER EV will follow on May 20. Production is expected to begin in Fall 2021 at GM’s Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant, GM’s first assembly plant 100 percent dedicated to EV production.

This not only ensures reliability but helps protect the future value of your SL. Essentially, the car has the right things done at the right time, by the right people, for the right price.”
CARE COMPLETE and CARE CONCIERGE bring inclusive servicing, this tailored to the CARE member’s typical usage.
A CARE COMPLETE member owning a 6-cylinder R107 SL driving under 1000 miles a year would pay just £40 a month for annual servicing and MoT test as well as all of CARE COMPLETE’s other benefits and savings. Should that annual mileage be between 1000 and 5000 miles, CARE COMPLETE subscription would cost £58 a month. The same owner, driving over 5000 miles annually, would pay just £75 a month for all of CARE’s extensive benefits and savings. CARE CONCIERGE adds £28 monthly over COMPLETE pricing.
Whatever CARE package an owner requires the value it represents is significantly in excess of the regular monthly payment, helping members manage their ownership costs and increasing the enjoyment of their cherished, classic SL.
Bailey says: “Over and above the reassurance of perfectly maintaining your pride and joy, the benefits CARE brings include priority passes to events, contact with our enthusiastic, knowledgeable SLSHOP team and the chance to engage with a like-minded community of SL enthusiasts.”
Bailey adds: “Far too many people own these cars and aren’t creating lasting memories in them. We encourage our CARE community to do more, drive more and see more. Our CARE plan adds huge value to a complete spectrum of classic SL ownership, allowing owners to realize the full potential of these incredible machines.”
MAZDA MOTORSPORTS SELECTS MULTIMATIC TO OPERATE IMSA RACE PROGRAM
Multimatic Motorsports will take over the operation of Mazda North America’s IMSA race program.
UK stars Oliver Jarvis and Harry Tincknell drive for Mazda in the IMSA Sportscar Series.
Watch our new ‘driver and car as one’ film here: https://youtu.be/D0U7-wweIHE
From the next round of the IMSA Sportscar Championship, Mazda’s two RT24-P prototypes will be operated by Multimatic Motorsports, the competition arm of global automotive engineering firm Multimatic Inc. With its broad experience in racing operations and race car development, Mazda has now tasked Multimatic with the operation of its flagship North American racing program.
The IMSA Sportscar Championship is a multi-class sportscar series with race distances varying from 24 hours to just one hour and forty minutes, and the Mazda RT24-P race cars compete in the fastest Daytona Prototype Class for overall victories. Commenting on the appointment, Nelson Cosgrove, Director Mazda Motorsports, said: “Mazda is looking forward to going racing with Multimatic when the IMSA resumes racing and we have a shared goal of winning the IMSA driver and manufacturer’s championships,” Adding, “the management and engineering staff of Multimatic are familiar with our team and will continue to elevate our program”.
With an unchanged driver line-up, UK sportscar racing stars Harry Tincknell and Oliver Jarvis remain at the heart of this US race program. With the world-famous Sebring 12 Hours postponed until later in the season, the IMSA series will resume when professional sporting events are able to restart in North America.
However, Mazda has started the year well with a strong result in the season-opening Daytona 24 Hours where Oliver Jarvis took pole position before finishing second in number 77 Mazda RT24-P alongside Olivier Pla and Tristan Nunez – Mazda’s best ever overall result in America’s most famous endurance race. Having faced technical issues in the closing hours, Harry Tincknell’s number 55 car crossed the line in 6th place.
Fresh from a strong showing at the first round of the series, Mazda North America’s British racing drivers Oliver Jarvis and Harry Tincknell returned to the UK to spend a day with the innovative Skyactiv-X powered Mazda3, to explore how, whether on-road or track, Mazda’s focus on the connection between car and driver is at the forefront of development.
Living in the UK but competing on the other side of the Atlantic, their day job involves racing the high-tech, lightweight and powerful Mazda RT24-P prototype but day-to-day in the UK both drivers enjoy Mazda’s road car range. And they took time out from their schedule to explain why Mazda’s ‘Jinba Ittai – car and driver as one’ engineering ethos applies to both road and track.
With driver focused cockpits, personally molded seats and the need to feel what the car is doing at the limit at all times, motorsport represents the very pinnacle of being at one with the car. Whether it’s steering feel, confidence on the brakes or the direct communication of the car’s grip level through the suspension - success and speed in competition relies entirely on the driver being intuitively connected to the car.
A concept that’s similar to the one that Mazda’s road car engineers pursue with their philosophy of ‘Jinba Ittai’. This sense of complete oneness with the car, which sits at the heart of every Mazda, has become a well-acknowledged trait of Mazda’s range. From the MX-5 sports car to the CX-5 SUV, a human-centered development approach has ensured that every Mazda, delivers the seat position, comfort and intuitive feedback needed for the driver to feel connected to the road and at one with the car, regardless of the type of journey.
Commenting on the Skyactiv-X Mazda3, Oliver Jarvis said: “while you’re obviously not pushing as hard as you are in the race car, with accurate feedback, well-weighted controls, and a great driving position, the Mazda3 still communicates with the driver and makes you feel engaged behind the wheel, regardless of what type of drive you are on, so there’s a correlation between track and road.”
Adding, “with both road cars and racing cars the amount of engineering effort and skill that goes into making a car feel natural in its feedback to the driver is huge. Whether it’s for comfort, safety and enjoyment on the road or performance on the track it’s crucial to be at one with the car”.
Harry Tincknell said: “whether it’s dealing with the high speeds of the Daytona banking, coping with the bumps of Sebring or navigating the tight corners of a street course like Long Beach you need to feel completely at one with the race car. Things are changing every second and you have to be able to react instinctively, and that’s no different on the road, where you need a good level of comfort and confidence to enjoy the experience as much as possible. There may be hundreds of different things that are just one percent better and you might not notice them when you jump into the car, but the combined result is that everything just feels natural and connected.”
Two of Britain’s biggest sports car racing stars, Oliver Jarvis and Harry Tincknell will be back in action when the IMSA Series recommences later this year. Whether it’s enjoying their Mazda3s in the UK or competing in the Mazda RT24-P in North America, both Oliver and Harry get to enjoy Mazda’s focus on the driver and the importance of being at one with the car. A synergy that is highlighted in our latest film: https://youtu.be/D0U7-wweIHE

London, 13 March 2020 - APEX, the global sports car brand, has taken the covers off its stunning new all-electric AP-0 sports car at its global launch event in London today. The brand brings a new philosophy to the sports car market, embracing the emotional connection between driver and machine, craftsmanship and pioneering, and design and engineering as cornerstones of its first in-house designed model, the fully electric AP-0.
Bringing full-electric performance and complete driver enjoyment, the AP-0 is a celebration of the feeling of being behind the wheel. The car offers more connected driving experience, embodying sustainability, pioneering technology, cutting edge design and, above all, a strong emotional connection.
The design of the AP-0 features, at its core, an ultra-lightweight carbon-fiber tub with modular spaceframes and a center spine for maximum rigidity. Meanwhile, the carbon fiber body panels wrap tightly around the tub while exposing parts of the central construction.
Costing from £150,000 (plus local taxes), the AP-0 goes into production in Q4 2022 and will be shipped to customers from its UK manufacturing base to customers worldwide. APEX is accepting deposits for the AP-0 from today.
The AP-0 is a triumph of how form and function can be combined in one harmonious package. This begins with the front aerodynamic bodywork, which channels air underneath the car and behind the front wheels, along the body and out below the large rear diffuser. The flat floor exploits ground effect principles, helping to pin the car to the ground for tremendous cornering ability.
This is aided by the low center of gravity provided by the 90kW floor-mounted battery pack. Together, these features enable the AP-0 to achieve a curb weight of just 1,200kg.
By virtue of its cutting-edge powertrain engineering and astonishingly light curb weight, the rear-wheel-drive AP-0 is capable of 0-62mph (0-100km/h) in 2.3 seconds. This rapid acceleration is backed up by an impressive maximum speed of 190mph, underlining the vehicle’s track credentials.
The AP-0 powertrain is designed and engineered to be more than simply a high-performance unit with immediate power delivery. Efficiency and a fast-charging time are imperative in delivering a luxury, performance electric vehicle for the modern driver. The resultant battery technology at the heart of the vehicle is capable of delivering enough charge to cover up to 320 miles (515km) (WLTP).
Technology plays a key part in the AP-0. The new sports car pushes the boundaries of accuracy and safety when it comes to driver assistance, courtesy of its advanced LiDAR sensor technology. The sensors generate detailed maps of the vehicle’s immediate surroundings, comprised of a high-resolution, three-dimensional image with minute details – measuring as little as a few centimeters – at distances of more than 100m away.
The LiDAR technology allows the AP-0 to more accurately identify potential hazards, pedestrians, cyclists, and other vehicles, increasing safety and providing ultimate peace of mind for the driver.
The AP-0 also features a holographic augmented reality (AR) display and AR Race Instructor, which gamify the way drivers can learn new racetracks and deliver the ultimate immersive racing experience.
Furthermore, APEX plans to develop an FIA-approved race track and racing academy in the Greater Bay Area, close to Hong Kong. The track will form part of a global research and development network to test future APEX models. It also plans to launch a race academy to train the next generation of drivers.
Every individual aspect of the AP-0 combines to form one of the most compelling new sports cars to enter the market both in terms of buying, owning and enjoying.
Design
Spearheaded by renowned UK designer Guy Colborne, APEX has cultivated a brand design philosophy like no other. The APEX AP-0 embodies a striking design language that evokes its powerful performance attributes and emphasizes the lightweight structure of the car. Artistic lines shape and accent the body, while traditional touches are seamlessly blended with futuristic elements.
Sharp, jagged lines rise from the base of the pronounced front spoiler, cutting around the wide front grille and encircling the piercing, three-part LED headlights before once again converging at the center of the bonnet. Two rear-view cameras proudly stand on each wing, swept towards the rear of the car.
A pair of clean, straight lines slice through each side of the front grille before meeting compact air intakes positioned below the headlights. With an additional vent in the center of the bonnet and carefully crafted lines across the sides of the car, these features encourage air to flow through and over the body. Inserted neatly under the wheel arches are the offset carbon fiber wheels, measuring 19 inches in diameter at the front and 20 inches at the rear, and married to elegant five-spoke rims.
The AP-0 is crowned with a teardrop-shaped glass roof that fuses with a structural, aerodynamic fin, influenced by Formula 1 and Le Mans styling. Beginning at the center point of the roof, where it houses the advanced LiDAR camera, the fin stretches and slowly descends to the rear of the car.
The rear of the APEX AP-0 is where the spirit and essence of the car truly come to life. The vast and dominating red tail light conjures the APEX emblem and makes the car instantly recognizable. Perfectly embracing the full width of the car, the light continuously flows from the far-left to the far-right points, peaking in the center to meet with the aerodynamic fin and simultaneously merging with the M-shaped rear diffuser. When illuminated, the tail light reflects both the night-time theatre of a modern city skyline and the technological prowess of the APEX brand.
Consistent with the overall focus on lightweight design, the AP-0 features a clean, simple interior. The cabin features two seats, raised just 180mm above ground level and constructed entirely of carbon fiber composite. The dashboard features smooth layers of materials that encapsulate the technology of the instrument cluster, while a compact steering wheel places superior control in the driver’s hands.

The AP-0’s powertrain is designed and engineered to be more than just a ferocious powerhouse. Efficiency and a fast-charging time are imperative in delivering a luxury, performance electric vehicle for the modern driver, and this fact was not lost on the AP-0’s engineering team. The resultant battery technology at the heart of the vehicle is capable of delivering enough charge to cover maximum of 320 miles (515km) (WLTP).
The Super EV is compatible with CCS, Type 2 and GB/T charging connectors, providing practicality and choice. For total convenience, the vehicle can be charged up to 80% in under 15 mins using a CCS charger, while the estimated charging time using a Type 2 connector is eight hours.
Chassis
The APEX AP-0’s chassis brings years of experience in the development and manufacture of advanced composite technologies to bear in incomparably lightweight, dynamic and robust construction. The featherlight chassis and bodywork contribute significantly to the vehicle’s track-ready dynamics and an exceptionally low curb weight of just 1,200kg.
Lightweight construction
The platform of the AP-0 has pioneering engineering and technology at its core. The fully composite structural monocoque tub features modular spaceframes and a center spine that links the front and rear of the car. The bodyshell is tightly wrapped over and around the tub and spine detail, as well as the front and rear wheels, while still exposing the carbon fiber chassis.
The AP-0’s batteries are floor mounted at both the front and rear of the platform in order to achieve the lowest possible center of gravity.
A suspension built for the track
The AP-0 is equipped with a pushrod suspension system – the preferred suspension style of most Formula 1 team. The pushrod system optimizes weight distribution, improves aerodynamics and enables the suspension to move with greater efficiency.
With a suspension system befitting the racing machines of Formula 1, and a chassis built to an unmatched level of technical specification, the AP-0 is as agile and tough as it is intensely fast.
The AP-0’s suspension system features automatic ride height adjustment, employing adjustable coil-over-shock springs and dampers.
The AP-0 features 19” x 9” front wheels and 20” x 11” rear wheels, with high spec radial tires fitted to both the front (245mm width) and back (305mm width). The low profile of the tires – 55 aspect ratio on the front and 30 aspect ratio on the back – delivers exceptional grip, control and steering response.
Brakes are 360mm x 32mm carbon ceramic discs and six-piston calipers on the front and 340mm x 30mm discs and four-piston calipers on the rear.
Dimensions, wheelbase, and track
Despite its race car-derived technology, the AP-0 is, first and foremost, a sports car. This is evident in its proportions: 4,380mm in length, 2,017mm in width and 1,224mm in height (including the roof-mounted LiDAR fin), with a front overhang of 970mm and a rear overhang measuring 760mm.
The AP-0 has a wheelbase of 2,650mm and a width of 1935mm. This carefully considered ratio maximizes cornering ability and ensures excellent handling, maneuverability, and stability – staying true to the brand’s mission of enabling the driver to attack the apex of every corner with absolute confidence.
Connectivity
The philosophy underpinning the APEX AP-0 is to create a genre of sports car merging impeccable performance with an unrivaled driving experience. This means creating the perfect blend of speed, control and an innate connection between driver and machine.
The word ‘connectivity’ in today’s world bares reference to a digital connection between systems, cars, phones, and infrastructure. While the AP-0 is fitted with a number of active and passive autonomous and connected technologies, ‘connectivity’ in APEX’s context is all about linking the car with those who have a true passion for driving.
Through impeccable design, which combines function within form, the AP-0 boasts a highly tuned and lightweight chassis that heightens the emotional connection behind the wheel, whether on-road or track. With a zero-emissions powertrain, the AP-0 delivers immediate torque, while the lightweight chassis – 1,200kg in total – coupled with the clever ground-effect aerodynamics makes it a unique prospect for driving enthusiasts.
Climbing inside, the cockpit of the AP-0 is designed around the driver, with contoured and ergonomically designed bucket seats that sit low in the central carbon-fiber tub to give that perfect race-derived feet-up driving position. The steering wheel is exquisitely manufactured from a combination of machined aluminum and carbon fiber, trimmed with perforated leather and soft-touch rubber dials on the mode selector push/pull rocker arms. All the cabin materials are designed to provide an enhanced sensory experience, contributing to the deeper emotional connection that is the bedrock of APEX’s design ethos.
Reinforcing the AP-0’s credentials as a sports car for the 2020s, the ground-breaking EV is fitted with an integrated forward-facing ADAS system positioned above the cockpit at the front of the tailfin.
The AP-0 pushes the boundaries of accuracy and safety when it comes to driver assistance, courtesy of its advanced LiDAR sensor technology. LiDAR sensors are able to generate detailed maps of the vehicle’s immediate surroundings, creating a high-resolution three-dimensional image and identifying minute details – measuring as little as a few centimeters – from more than 100m away and in all weather conditions.
This technology enhances the vehicle’s ADAS capability and enables the AP-0 to more accurately identify potential hazards, pedestrians, cyclists, and other vehicles, increasing safety and providing ultimate peace of mind for the driver.
The AP-0 also features a holographic augmented reality (AR) display and AR Race Instructor, which gamifies the way drivers can learn new race tracks and delivers the ultimate immersive racing experience.
