Continuing the Tradition of Volunteerism at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca
MONTEREY, Calif., July 7, 2020 – The management of the Laguna Seca Recreation Area has established a new department to support and work with the numerous service organizations and 250-plus dedicated volunteers who formerly comprised the volunteer base of the Sports Car Racing Association of the Monterey Peninsula (SCRAMP). Recently, after months of contract discussions with a select group of officers of the Laguna Seca Volunteer Association, who were former SCRAMP officers, the association determined not to continue discussions with A&D Narigi Consulting LLC, per an email the association sent to volunteers.
“We have been engaging with the enthusiastic service clubs who have volunteered in the past and many of the men and women who have supported racing on the Monterey Peninsula over the years,” said John Narigi, president and general manager of WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. “I have a deep respect for the community-minded individuals who have provided countless hours over the years to ensure each event runs safely and smoothly, and we look forward to continuing that dynamic tradition.”
WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca created a new volunteer department to work closely with the organizations that want to continue supporting the events, as well as assistant directors and individuals. Headed by Kalina McKinney, volunteer coordinator at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, the priority is revising the volunteer structure to provide consistent communication and involvement opportunities that match each person’s interest.
“The individuals whom I have communicated with are enthusiastic about returning as ambassadors of WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca,” said McKinney. “I am greatly encouraged by the responses and knowledge base they are sharing. Now, we just need to get back on track.”
In addition to the 250-plus assistant directors, there are more than 300 people who have expressed interest in volunteering to support community events or are enthusiastic racing fans who want a behind-the-scenes role in providing a welcoming guest experience. Letters are being sent to all the individuals interested in the 2020 and 2021 season.
WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca is a world-renowned 2.238-mile traditional road course that was built in 1957 and was known at the time as Laguna Seca Raceway. WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca is owned by the County of Monterey and operated by A&D Narigi Consulting LLC.
