PETERSEN AUTOMOTIVE MUSEUM TO AUCTION SUPERFORMANCE MKII SLAB SIDE DURING ANNUAL GALA CELEBRATION
Donated by Superformance LLC, the MKII Slab Side is an officially licensed continuation vehicle modeled after the 1962 Shelby Cobra 289; all sale proceeds will benefit The Petersen Automotive Museum Foundation.
LOS ANGELES (Sept. 23, 2020) – During its 26th Annual Gala Celebration on Sept. 26, 2020, the Petersen Automotive Museum will auction the MKII Slab Side continuation vehicle produced by Irvine-based manufacturer Superformance LLC. The proceeds generated from the sale of this vehicle and the other auction lots will benefit The Petersen Automotive Museum Foundation — a non-profit 501(c)(3) charity that supports underprivileged students in the Los Angeles community.
Licensed by Shelby Licensing, the Superformance MKII Slab Side is aesthetically and dimensionally correct to the original 289 Cobras of the early ‘60s, with several modern upgrades in materials and design that incorporate safety and performance improvements without sacrificing driving excitement or originality.
“Lance Stander and Superformance LLC have been partners of the Petersen for several years,” said Petersen Automotive Museum Executive Director Terry L. Karges. “We are grateful to announce the company’s donation as well as the other auction lots for our 26th Annual Gala Celebration, which is our largest fundraising event of the year.”
Painted Shelby Guardsman Blue, the MKII features a brass windshield that has been nickel-plated and chromed along with a complete set of chrome bumpers. Hood latches, headlights, turn signals, and the original-style aluminum grill complete the exterior appearance. The 306 cubic-inch BluePrint Engines-built powerplant produces 388 horsepower and is mated to a Tremec T-5 5-speed manual transmission.
“We’re honored to gift them this gorgeous classic roadster,” said Lance Stander, CEO of Superformance LLC. “Since 1994, the Petersen has celebrated automobile culture and artistry around the world. We donated the MKII because it embodies the spirit of one of SoCal’s greatest automotive heroes, Carroll Shelby. He was a great friend of Bob Petersen, who founded the museum, so it was fitting to gift a car that honors Carroll’s legacy and raises funds to help the Petersen Automotive Museum thrive for generations to come.”
The Petersen Automotive Museum’s 26th Annual Gala Celebration will be an entirely digital experience for ticket holders. Highlights of the evening include 45 minutes of exclusive content, archival footage, and a gift bag, which will be shipped to guests’ home addresses.
Significant auction highlights include a fully restored 1961 MGA Outlaw and a six-night stay in a Scottish castle complete with a private chef and house staff. Additional lots for auction encompass a once-in-a-lifetime ride with driver Bruce Canepa in a Porsche 935 at Sonoma Raceway and a surprise vehicle allocation.
